What was the best movie you saw this year?
Die Hard 4. Yippie ka yay. :)
What was your major or field of study in college? Did you wind up working in that field or using that degree? If not, what field have you wound up in?
Submitted by sneuf.
i majored in graphic design, and work... as a graphic designer. My degree wasn't cheap, and there was no way i wasn't going to use it. i went to a tech/art school, which i believe is the best way to get a graphic design degree. i looked at the programs at several universities, and there was way too much emphasis on traditional art. At my school, that emphasis was minimal. i also have a two-year degree in web design, but i have pretty much no interest in using that right now. It made my brain hurt.
Speaking of work... It's so quiet today that i actually thought for a moment... "Wait, is today REALLY Monday?" My boss is missing in action, the phones are down so they're not ringing, and no one's coming in... knock on wood. Short of leaving my cell phone at home, it's been a pretty awesome day so far! It's a lovely 47 degrees outside and i'm starting the day with peace, quiet, and a pomegranate energy drink. Of course, without the cell phone i have no way of getting a hold of my boss and asking where the deuce he is, but... eh. And as slow as it is, i could have just turned around when i realized i'd left my phone at home on the way here.
Which are your favorite sites for shopping online?
i'm always a big fan of Amazon. 9 times out of 10, it IS the cheapest place online, at least in my experience. i'm also usually glad to find that almost everything i've wanted to purchase has been offered there, either by Amazon itself or by an associate seller or shop. So, it generally works out well.
i've also become a fan of Etsy lately. It's a really neat place that i've only recently really discovered that easily allows crafty types to sell handmade goods online. Virtually everything is one-of-a-kind, and the one purchase i've made via Etsy so far was pretty successful. One of my resolutions in the coming new year is to make time to be more crafty and do something hands-on creative, so seeing all the stuff people sell is pretty inspiring and fills my head with ideas for artistic endeavors.
Now on to the belated Holidailies prompts... God, i suck at keeping up, but... it IS a busy time of year, after all. Falling behind is bound to happen now and then, and i'd rather it happen at home than at work.
#7: How is this December different from last year?
Though i'm a lot more stressed out, i know i'm in a better place now. i've become far more independent, which is a good feeling at the end of the day. i have a job that i enjoy most of the time - even though its stressful, even though i constantly feel overwhelmed, even though i'm not getting paid what i probably deserve... and so forth. i'm in a much healthier relationship than i was last year. And of course, there's Wonka... Overall, life isn't perfect by a long shot, and although the changes have been exceedingly hard sometimes, they were all for the best in the end.
#8: Write your own version of those holiday newsletters that people send to friends and relatives at this time of year.
.... Ugh.
What an odd prompt. I suppose this year, the best experience of this kind was getting rid of the Cavalier and upgrading to the Jeep. i had a lot of memories with the Deerkiller but as much as i drive now, it was time to let go. Thankfully, i love the Jeep, and i'm amazed at how often it comes in handy. It's going to make buying a ladder and a Christmas tree today much easier, that's for sure.#9: Your best experience getting rid of something.
Did you see the Harry Potter movie this weekend? Are you going to read the new book?
No, and no. And that damned movie messed up my seeing Die Hard again last Wednesday.
Though i'll be seeing SOMETHING on Thursday. Most likely Captivity. Or Die Hard. Again.
YIPPIE KA YAY, MOTHERFUCKER.
After all the recent season and series finales, what are you watching on TV these days?
Lots of cartoons. Lots.
Tell us about a lesson you had to learn the hard way.
"Better to have loved and lost" is a total crock. i'm learning that now.
Have you ever purchased something from an infomercial?
Submitted by Colleen.
A
few things, sadly... but only two that i recall that were directly from
TV people. i bought my ex one of those MXZ saws that will supposedly
cut though anything. From what i saw, it seems to live up to that
claim. i also bought some silly double-frying pan that was supposed to
make perfect pancakes, named, appropriately enough, the "Perfect
Pancake". It was a bit short of perfect. In fact, it was a bust.
What are some charitable causes that you support or would like to support?
Last winter, during my last trip to Chicago (iwantgobacknowplease), i "adopted" a lion from Lincoln Park Zoo. i renewed it this year, and it will be something i do every year, i'm thinking. i love that zoo, it's my favorite that i've been to and one of my favorite places in the city. Admission is free and everyone who works there is always friendly and wonderful, so i'll happily donate to show my appreciation.
On more than one occasion i've donated to specific cases i've seen on TV or online of some poor dog being abused by some demented asshole. Some poor unsuspecting dog wandered onto some sick asshole's property once, only to be severely burned. i sent some money along to help out with the poor guy's extensive vet bills, and thankfully he ended up being ok because so many people did whatever they could to help.
Most of the causes i support or donate to, i'd say 9 out of 10, are animal-related, and most of those are dog-related. My two dogs sometimes cause headaches and frustration, but there's nothing on earth that could get between me and my furry babies, so if i can help out another animal, maybe even help it find a loving home, i will.
All of this gets me thinking more about moving, because once i'm settled in, i do intend to adopt another dog. i know i'm going to get a lot of opposition to this because a few important people in my life seem to feel i have "enough pets", but it's something i feel very strongly about doing - especially since i intend to adopt a pit bull. There's no other animal that i can think of that gets such an undeserved negative reputation, and while i can't save all of them who've been abused or tortured or abandoned, i can sure as hell save at least one and give them a loving home. The people against it can, and will have to, get over it eventually.
In your ultimate dream house, what does your favorite room look like?
This is a good question, especially now. i found out yesterday that i will indeed be moving soon, so things like this have been on my mind a lot. You know, HGTV-themed things, heh..
i'm going to say that my favorite room will likely be my "office", since i'm sure most of my computer stuff and toys will wind up in there. The walls will be painted a light blue-green to stimulate relaxation and creativity. Perhaps a darker blue on the bottom, even, depends on how creative and motivated i'm going to get. There will be curtains, though i have no idea what color yet. No more plastic mini-blinds, i'm sick to death of them, so... something else.
i'll most likely get a new desk. i have serious doubts that this one will survive the move, and i have my eye on something modern, something that's part of a "set" - i love this one in particular, and it's perfect for what i need, and i like the dark wood its available in. The walls will be lined with bookshelves, of course, since i have a ton of books. i'll also probably hang at least some of the modular shelves i just put up in here in there, after painting them to match whatever new desk i end up getting. Plus i love the cool twisty metal things that hold them up, and they'd match a modern sort of desk. But, moving right along...
i'd love to put some sort of a loveseat/small couch in there, as well, for times when friends or clients come over. At the very least, a chair or two... i'd also love to get some sort of "chest" or trunk to hold some of my toys. i'm sure there will be posters up, though i'm thinking i'll keep the nerdiness to a minimum - i can always periodically swap the posters out. i'm also going to hang my lightsabers on the walls using Saber Stands, specially made for them. And get my Darth Maul lightsaber and the Obi-Wan saber from Episode 3, since it's such a beautiful shade of blue
i'm very excited about all the possibilities this move presents. :) i've been bouncing off the walls for a couple of days now, and my mind's racing with ideas.
