What was your major or field of study in college? Did you wind up working in that field or using that degree? If not, what field have you wound up in?
Submitted by sneuf.

i majored in graphic design, and work... as a graphic designer. My degree wasn't cheap, and there was no way i wasn't going to use it. i went to a tech/art school, which i believe is the best way to get a graphic design degree. i looked at the programs at several universities, and there was way too much emphasis on traditional art. At my school, that emphasis was minimal. i also have a two-year degree in web design, but i have pretty much no interest in using that right now. It made my brain hurt.

Speaking of work... It's so quiet today that i actually thought for a moment... "Wait, is today REALLY Monday?" My boss is missing in action, the phones are down so they're not ringing, and no one's coming in... knock on wood. Short of leaving my cell phone at home, it's been a pretty awesome day so far! It's a lovely 47 degrees outside and i'm starting the day with peace, quiet, and a pomegranate energy drink. Of course, without the cell phone i have no way of getting a hold of my boss and asking where the deuce he is, but... eh. And as slow as it is, i could have just turned around when i realized i'd left my phone at home on the way here.

Maybe i'll just start updating from work, like now, heh. At least i'm guaranteed to be at a computer.

Methinks my busy schedule is not conducive to Holidailies posting, so i'm technically giving up and just sporadically doing prompts that i like. This'll teach me to try and take part in a post-a-day thing again. =/

#12: Favorite holiday recipe.

Honestly? A stiff vodka and cranberry. My grandmother and i tend to partake in them every Christmas. My grandma's 4'10" and extremely German, complete with a super-thick accent despite being in the US since the 50s. She's fun, until she starts slapping smokers.

*is a smoker*

Anyway.

It's been a funny couple of days. Suffice it to say that, in general, i don't feel very appreciated. i don't think people really MEAN to make me feel that way, at least not all the time. (Sometimes i suspect they do.) Little things have built up over time, worries get worse and worse, and i constantly feel like i get lost in everyone else's shuffle.

Yesterday was particularly abyssmal. Some asshole made a remark about me knowing what my job is because i forgot to give my boss a message that the guy called. i don't give messages because its my job. i'm not a secretary. i give messages because its courteous, and he does the same when people call for me and i'm not in. i get that kind of attitude a lot, and i know its because i sit up front while Bossman hides in the back. Anyway... i did slip by not passing the message along, but when i'm here alone i have to answer all the calls, deal with all the walk-ins, AND stay on top of my ever-growing pile of actual work. It's hard, and on rare occasions, something slips through the cracks. That does not warrant the attitude this man gives, nor is it the first time he's blown up at us for not bending over backwards for him. Besides, he got his shit on time.

But i digress... After a long, miserable day, i decided to treat myself to a nice meal at Bonefish. Take-out, of course. When i went to pick it up, the hostess asked if i knew who John Cena was. Sure. i used to watch wrestling all the time, and recently started half-watching since Jericho's back. "He just came in, he's sitting over there." i look, and sure enough, there's John Cena. That is a BIG MAN. That odd little star-sighting and an absolutely delicious meal really perked me up quite a bit.

Today was just OFF. i have never forgotten to take my purse somewhere... until today. Not only did i leave my purse home, but i left my cell, too. i have no clue what the hell was wrong with me there. Thankfully Michael's number was on my online wireless bill and he brought the stuff to me. i wouldn't have been concerned as much had i had any money on me for lunch or gas to get home, but with no cash or credit cards and being in dire need of a fill-up... Yeah. Thank god he brought it, but i'm still in shock that i was so careless. Weirder shit happens, i guess.

Bored. Waiting on people to pick tihngs up so i can leave. i must rake my living room.

Which are your favorite sites for shopping online?

i'm always a big fan of Amazon. 9 times out of 10, it IS the cheapest place online, at least in my experience. i'm also usually glad to find that almost everything i've wanted to purchase has been offered there, either by Amazon itself or by an associate seller or shop. So, it generally works out well.

i've also become a fan of Etsy lately. It's a really neat place that i've only recently really discovered that easily allows crafty types to sell handmade goods online. Virtually everything is one-of-a-kind, and the one purchase i've made via Etsy so far was pretty successful. One of my resolutions in the coming new year is to make time to be more crafty and do something hands-on creative, so seeing all the stuff people sell is pretty inspiring and fills my head with ideas for artistic endeavors.

Now on to the belated Holidailies prompts... God, i suck at keeping up, but... it IS a busy time of year, after all. Falling behind is bound to happen now and then, and i'd rather it happen at home than at work.

#7: How is this December different from last year?

Though i'm a lot more stressed out, i know i'm in a better place now. i've become far more independent, which is a good feeling at the end of the day. i have a job that i enjoy most of the time - even though its stressful, even though i constantly feel overwhelmed, even though i'm not getting paid what i probably deserve... and so forth. i'm in a much healthier relationship than i was last year. And of course, there's Wonka... Overall, life isn't perfect by a long shot, and although the changes have been exceedingly hard sometimes, they were all for the best in the end.

#8: Write your own version of those holiday newsletters that people send to friends and relatives at this time of year.

.... Ugh.

#9: Your best experience getting rid of something.

What an odd prompt. I suppose this year, the best experience of this kind was getting rid of the Cavalier and upgrading to the Jeep. i had a lot of memories with the Deerkiller but as much as i drive now, it was time to let go. Thankfully, i love the Jeep, and i'm amazed at how often it comes in handy. It's going to make buying a ladder and a Christmas tree today much easier, that's for sure.

Jeez. i just can't keep up. i blame work, which makes being on a computer now a lot less fun. i can't even remember the last time i logged into WoW, even though i just paid $70 to keep my subscription for 6 more months. =/

#4: What childhood activity do you miss? What childhood activities have you refused to give up?

First, i refuse to give up on our family tradition of throwing balled up wrapping paper around like idiots. We've done it for as long as i remember, and i'm sure it will continue for years to come. i can't really think of anything that i miss, though. Christmas hasn't really changed all that much since i was a kid, except that now i have to worry about what to buy people and getting my holiday lights/tree/decor extravaganza going.

#5: Your favorite holiday lights.

i absolutely LOVE my penguin. It's got a ton of plastic crystals that do a great job of reflecting and bouncing light, making it look like there's three times as many lights on it. It's small, but it's just so pretty. i'm a big fan of light-up penguins in general. i propose they become used on more than just Christmas.

#6: What are your ideas for the Holidailies Charity Project, and which organization would you choose?

It's not literacy-related at all, but i'm inspired by the wonderful doggy sitting behind me. i would choose any shelter organization (Humane Society, SPCA, etc.), or, more specifically, pit bull rescues because that's where i got my angel. There are dozens to choose from, working so hard to restore the pit bull's reputation, and to educate the public on FACTS about these dogs, not hype. i strongly encourage everyone to support these kinds of organizations. Adopt from shelters and rescues, donate your time or pet supplies, do whatever you can. This is going to be one of my new year's resolutions, as well, so it's something i've had on my mind a lot lately.

Tell us a story about snow.

The first year I saw snow was 1999, when I was 19. I was in the Ann Arbor/Detroit area with my ex, and remember him waking me up one morning telling me it was snowing. I was thrilled, as it was the very first time i'd seen snow. It's just a shame it wasn't more than a light dusting. I did manage to make a snowman, though he was only about 6" tall.

This seemed like a neat idea. i've decided to participate in Holidailies this year. Never quite done anything like it before, and thought it may be fun... i could use a little fun, especially of the though-provoking, introspective variety.

Holidailies prompt #1: It's the first day of Holidailies, so introduce yourself.

Well... i'm 27. i work as a graphic designer at a print shop, which has proven to be both very fun and very frustrating. But, all in all, i guess i enjoy it most days. i'm an animal-lover. i live with two large dogs (a chow/retriever and a pit bull), a cat, and a ball python. Pets aside, i technically live alone, but i have a great boyfriend who's over quite a bit as well. He's been a huge help to me this year, and i love his creativity and his drive.

Holidailies prompt #2: Maintaining friendships ... and do holiday cards help?

i think that holiday cards have the potential to help, especially as busy as people can get sometimes with work and family throughout the year. i'd like to send cards out this year since it's my first year running my own Christmas show, but i need to collect addresses and actually produce the cards, first. There are some people i don't see regularly who i'd definitely like to send them out to, so i need to get on the ball with that, i suppose. Really, given that i see most of my friends regularly already, i don't think the cards will make much difference, but it's a fun project.

Did you see the Harry Potter movie this weekend? Are you going to read the new book?

No, and no. And that damned movie messed up my seeing Die Hard again last Wednesday.

Though i'll be seeing SOMETHING on Thursday. Most likely Captivity. Or Die Hard. Again.

YIPPIE KA YAY, MOTHERFUCKER.
